I found a style that I want, and I had my mom cut the length of my hair, but I don't trust her to cut the layers into it, as last time she did any serious cutting, she had me wearing a hat for months. I don't have the money to go to a salon and have them cut it and probably do it wrong, so how do you cut layers? I've looked at other sites and they're all like, "bend over, brush hair over, blah blah blah...", but I don't want them underneath, I want them on top.

I want the layers like that, so... how would I go about doing that?

I don't recommend layering your own hair. Try going to a beauty school. You can get a great discount.

i really wouldn't risk it, especially since your hair is short and you can't really cut it shorter. go to a salon or don't get layers

trust me, it is true about the bend over stuff. cuz when you stand back up it will be perfect layers. my hair is layered and when i blow dry my hair i bend over to get the part underneath and when i do, my hair looks all one length. so try it. u will love it.

I've cut my own hair most of my life, and I'd go for it. However, this isn't such an easy style to do yourself, and you'll have to live with the consequences if you mess it up. I've messed up once only when using a shaver to cut the back, and cut it too short.
Bending over does make it easier to cut your hair, and then your hair is hanging so you can see what you are doing, instead of trying to see it in a mirror. I usually stand in front of a mirror, and then have a hand held one to hold up to the back to see if I did it alright.
When I cut it, I go slowly and cut only a little bit off at a time. Avoid cutting off a lot at once, it's too easy to cut it too short then.
With you hair hanging over you can grab strands of your hair, twirl it around at the end, and cut the tip of the strand in a sliding down movement. Not straight across. You use the scissor blades like a razor in other words.
Continue all over your head, and check a lot using the mirrors.
You are going to have to estimate yourself how short to cut each part. Just remember a little length cut off at a time.
Good luck! Be creative. :)

when I layer hair I put it all on top in a pony tail on the top of the head and cut straight across about an inch down or so, it doesnt take any length off, it actually a bulk thing, and it will make the layers from the top to the bottom not the other way around.

technically that is a very difficult bob and a razor is used on the ends of the hair..something you won't be able to do without going to school to learn...just take this pic and bring it to the hairdresser and get it cut...i am in school for this so i can tell you how to cut layers its so easy..section hair down the middle..part down by ear..twist into four sections...at bottom nape of neck..take 1/4 section you will use this as ur guide...cut the length off that you want...now clip that and start at the top of the head...you are going to take 1/4 sections from each part you made in the back..hold up the hair at a 90 degree angle and snip away....each part you take should be matched up with the last section you just cut....the end result is hair that appears layered but really is all just one length also referred to as increased layers..remember the guide you cut is how much you are taking off the entire hair cut...you can do this on the sides as well..its a really cute hair cut and it looks really nice..if you already have layers then it won't be the same length it will look graduated slightly or stacked in the back...remember when you snip you only snip a bit at the time with both the comb and the scissors in ur hand at the same time..the razor would be taken over the ends on the top hair strands slightly moving downwards to remove bulk but not length...its hard to tell you over the internet but that is the best i can do just email me or something if you have more questions
