We have a Bichon, we have been very strapped for cash lately and couldn't affors to get his hair cut in a long time. We diceded to cut it ourselves. He looks like a mangy mess, but he is happier. Do you think the groomer will care the next time we bring him in?
Cutting your own dog hair?
I wouldn't. i'm a groomer and as long as you were honest with me on why he looks like he does, i wouldn't form an opinion.
i'm glad you took the initiative to do it yourself. you can see he's happier. and he really doesn't care how he looks. the mats are gone. doesn't feel so ba any more. that's all he cares about.
you have a high maintenance dog. have you thought about getting lessons on doing it yourself?
I'm in st louis and do private lessons. but the lessons could save a butload of money down the road
email me if interested

Yes...
Cutting your own dog hair?
Nope, not a bit. His hair will grow back and they can shape it to look right. Just don't start cutting at it for a while. Let it grow outa bit before you take him back to the groomer so they have something to work with. And...I hope you don't feel embarassed for how he looks now. Scissor trimming a Bichon is NOT easy, so unless you have a lot of practice at it...he's bound to look a little imperfect.

i say try to fix the cut before spending the money on something you could have done for free... :) my dog has a funny haircut too

I used to have a Sheltie and I groomed her from time to time. It does get expensive going each month or so. Just let him/her know you need to only go every few week, months whatever works for you. If you are honest they don't seem to mind. Just make sure you are clear so she/he doesn't think you don't like the services. Better to be honest! Love your dog too... I want one!

why would u do that?
Cutting your own dog hair?
He/she will definetly notice, but as long as you didn't hurt your dog it's not really their business to "bash" you for it. If your groomer is a nosey snob, I suggest getting a new one. Or how about reading up on the breed cuts and becoming his full time stylist.

Even if they do, they probably won't be rude or mention it. You did what you had to do to care for your puppy. If your groomer is rude, find another groomer.

I do my own dog grooming.
You need to bathe them first and make sure they're really dry. Get out all the mats using round tipped scissors or a dematting comb.
I actually invested in a pair of clippers. If you keep them cleaned and oiled, they last forever. Anyway, I put one of the lifts on the clipper - one of the plastic things. The longer your dog's hair is, the longer the lift should be. You dont' want to try to take a dog with 4" long fur to 1/2" with one pass. You always trim in the same direction as the hair grows to keep it looking even, and you hold the clippers parallel to the dog, not diving in at an angle.
Stay away from the face, ears, feet, and the "private" areas unless you know what you're doing. WIth a little practice and some patience, you can do a basic cut all by yourself.
Oh..and always use a lift. The clippers can get really hot, and you can burn your dog easily without one. It's also smart to clean the blade (unplug it first), and oil it frequently as you're cutting.

I have a bichon which is also part maltese. Her hair is just
like a bichon and I hate it. I have cut it myself and I seen the
groomer at the pet store do it, so I thought I would try it.
I used those electric clippers and scissors. I cut the hair short
on the head and face which looks nice, and I used the scissors
on the rest of her body. I just tried to make it as even as I could,
and the hairs that needed to be fixed after I just trimmed.
I think she looks pretty good. If you do still want to take the dog
to the groomer, they arn't going to say anything negative to you.
IT's your dog. I am sure alot of people try to cut their pets hair.

No,they get *HOME-BUTCHERED* dogs coming in all the time.
Hope you learned from the disaster.
