Twice now, when Mr.Pippin has been shaved for summer, he has shivered and not eaten. I had to put water in his mouth the first couple days because he wouldn't eat or drink. Within the past three years, this has happened after getting his hair shaved. Do you think the mohawk is so embarassing to him that he made himself sick?

Do you use a flea shampoo when you shave him? Cause I've seen that happen after a flea bath on several occasions, flea shampoos are nasty toxic things. Over the counter flea meds are very harsh and make a lot of animals sick. Read the fine print, and you'll find warnings about possible seizures and sudden death. If the clippers stress him out, that could make him sick too. Stop shaving him, or just shave his belly so he can lie on the cool ground but not be totally unprotected from the sun.

It could be! Ha! I shave my male pom in the summers and he loves it, but I don't leave a mohawk, just shave him down to an inch and a half. Have you talked to the vet about it?

It sounds like he is cold and uncomfortable. Maybe next time just a short fur cut instead of a shave. My dog seems cold, but only for the first day. I usually put a jacket on her at first and also if the weather cools down.

He's most likely very traumatized from the procedure. If he suffers like that, I've got to ask why you continue to take him for a cut? You could ask your vet for some Valium for your dog, but why go thru all that trouble.

ETA: I never thought of flea shampoo like lizzy said but she's got a point. He could be having a very bad reaction to the shampoo, so maybe you should bring your own gentle shampoo for them to use, and see if he fares better.

this is probley how the groomer is treating him. or shampoo. change groomer or ask about this to a vet or groomer.

You didn't say what breed of dog he is, but he obviously does NOT tolerate shaving and you should NOT have him shaved.

Dogs don't make themselves sick because of embarassment. Only human beings minds work that way.

NEVER have him shaved.

You can cut the hair to 2" but considering how it disrupts him, it's cruel to cut his hair any shorter than 2". His reaction to being shaved tells me that it is VERY HARMFUL to him.

Sounds like he has a bad experience at the groomer's. Do you know if your groomer dries your dog at the grooming table or does (s)he cage dry him? When they are cage dried, it is very stressful for them and can make them sick if they get too hot/ or for too long with heat blowing on them.

Also, What kind of hair does he have before shaving him? If he is reacting to hair being shaved too short, you could ask the groomer to use a blade that doesn't cut so short, like a number 4 blade or an extender for the blade. This would leave a plush coat. He'd need grooming more often but might feel more comfortable. Discuss this with your groomer if you trust your groomer or get references from people for a groomer that others say is good with dogs. Not all are.
