What to do when two parents disagree over cutting male child's hair? Let it grow long like a gi

I am the mom. I want my son's hair cut short like a boy. His dad wants it grown long like a girl. My son is now 4 1/12 and it goes down to the middle of his back. I hate it!!!! His dad says he would kill me if I cut it. What do I do and what are my rights as his mom?

sounds like you are not married to rational person i would cut it like a little boys hair should and tell him if you kill me you will go to jail are there more things going on then this in your house?

Personally I;d cut it, I think guys with really long hair look really stupid (ESPECIALLY if they're kids!). Discuss it with his dad and tell him that YOU want it cut.

Is this really worth fighting with your spouse over? Learn to pick your battles, you dress him the way you want and let the Dad have the long hair! It won't be forever! As soon as the kids at school start making fun of him, he'll want it cut himself!

try tossing a coin! even better, take turns- let him grow his hair for a month n then cut it..he can grow it for another month..!i am not sure his dad will agree to this compromise though!

The boy can speak for himself at 4 and a half. Ask him what he wants without hinting at yours or the father's opinion. And as far as your rights as the Mom go, if you have 50/50 custody or full custody, you can cut your son's hair whenever you want. He can't take you to court or have you arrested for it lol.

I think you are correct in wanting to cut it short. Your son is 4, so he has no mind of his own on what looks presentable. Your doing him wrong if you let his hair grow out; he'll get lice easier, and could even be made fun of by his classmates(leaving psychological scars)....Just let your husband read all these responses, and im sure he'll agree with you.

Cut his hair short, tell the father that he is too young to make the decision weather he wants long or short hair, he can make that decision on his own when he is old enough to make his own decisions on how he wants his hair to look.

i agree you should ask your son. it's his hair, after all. it's a personal preference, not a health or safety issue.

and if he grows it long like his dad wants, just make sure dad's in charge of washing and combing it.

If I were you I would go to the barber shop when he's working and cut it cuz that is too long for a little boy! I would feel like if people would confuse him with a girl!!

Your husband has some seroius issues going on to threaten to kill you over a bad hair style for a boy that age...he isn't Little Lord Fauntleroy, take him to the barber and save him a lot of grief. Your husband sounds nuts.

u r the mother and u have every right to cut his hair if u want to.

a friend of mine recently got her son's hair cut. she didn't want to do it but her son wanted it cut and he said he wanted to donate it to kids with cancer. who can say no to that reasoning. so this may be something u want to do.

How about a compromise style? Why don't you find a medium length style you guys can both be comfortable with.

Also, referring to your son's hair as being like a girl's may cause resentment from you bf and son. Try hard not to put him down in front of him. Kids pick up on that more than you know. My little brother was always very effeminate. My stepmom used to tease him that he was gay alot. Now he has a very big complex and worries that everyone he meets will think he's gay. My stepmom never said her comments in a gaybashing or even negative way... just made comments that she expected to see boyfriends instead of girlfriends. It still made a very negative impact on him.

Cut it, I did, my son only 18mths but his hair is out of control my partner said he would go nuts if i cut his curls off, i said he is a boy and he is gonna look like a boy, so i cut his hair when my partner wasnt in! My partner had to admit it looked better and he looked like a little boy, so i would tell your childs father taht you dont want him bullied at school, he is not a girl he is a boy and boys have short hair and just do it, what can he do about it really if you cut his hair? Your his mother you have every right.

What does your son want??? If he is fine with his hair long then leave it but if he doens't like it and it bothers him being mistaken for a girl (which I would have to think it would) then he should be allowed to have his hair cut short.

Get it cut! Maybe compromise and go with a stylish shaggy cut, but his dad is being ridiculous!

I hate seeing little boys with long, girly hair. Kade Hudson's son, Ryder, looks ridiculous, but at least she gave a real, concrete reason why she let his hair grow long (in a specific branch of Judaism, you don't cut a childs hair until they're 3).

Does your boyfriend have long hair? Does your boyfriend want to grow his own hair long? Perhaps he wants the boy to be more like him.

Does dad take an active role in washing and brushing that mass of hair? It's got to be full of tangles constantly!

Does dad know that people think is little man is a girl? That might wound his pride a little, if you let him know.

I really agree with all the people asking what the boy thinks about it. At 4 1/2, he's nearly ready to start kindergarten, and that's plenty old enough to have formed an opinion of his own. Does he hate to have it messed with? That's a sign that he's ready to cut it off.

At very least, see if you can't talk the dad into letting it be trimmed back, at least to his shoulders.

Or hey, here's an idea. How does your mother feel about your boyfried? If she wouldn't mind getting on his bad side, you can always let her babysit for a day while you do something. He certainly can't blame it on you is he gets his hair caught in something while he's with grandma, and she's forced to cut it off!

A 4 1/2 year old should know if he/she wants their hair long or short. Talk to him, ask him if he likes it the way it is or if he would like to try having it short. Like some others said don't push your choice on him let him decide. If he does decide to cut it find out if what is cut off is long enough for the cancer society to use as the other answer suggested. My mom has cancer and was really happy to be able to get a wig made from human hair. Good luck:)

I know a little girl at church who will be four in a few months, and she accidentally cut chunks of her hair really short so they had to cut it. It looks cute on her, a little pixie cut. ...I'm not saying you should let your son play with scissors all alone, but kids do seem to cut their own hair a lot of times....

What to do when two parents disagree over cutting male child's hair? Let it grow long like a girl or cut short

if your son wants it cut, cut it! it isn't your or the fathers choice much anymore, he has a full opinion and for something so simple let him have a bit of independance.

Personally I would have had it cut LONG before this, with or without dads consent. It isn't like you are deciding on a major surgery or anything without dads input, it is a simple hair cut and the hair will grow back. Maybe don't go for a super short hair cut, maybe give it a shaggy boys cut, that way there is some length for dads happiness and it is still boyish for you and your son to be happy with a whole lot less confusing on his gender too, which must get to him.

The bigger issue is that man threatening to KILL you. Just an expression or serious? If he's serious- leave him then cut the boys hair. If it's just a phrase- stay and cut the boys hair. Either way cut his hair. Boys should look like boys.

This is just my opinion. I would cut it. Make him look like a little man. He doesn't like it anyway. Then later in life if he himself decides he wants to grow it out and is able and willing to keep it clean and tidy, then let him grow it out. He could possibly develop a complex by constantly being confused for a girl. My husband has long hair, to his lower back, and both of us agreed that our son can grow his hair out when he is A) old enough to take make the decision himself to have long hair and be able to take care of it himself B) Not be confused for a girl.
