im trying to explain to my father not to cute my labs hair during this cold weather. its like 20 degrees outside and he wants to shave her bald. (she looks like a rat when this happens lol) but the groomer should kno not to shave her during this weather right? i told him to wait until it gets warmer at the least...what are your opinons on this?

What's your dad's reasoning for shaving a Lab? Your dog's coat is it's means of protection from the elements. Shaving her can cause serious harm. Labs, in my opinion, should NEVER be shaved. They have a short coat.
Does she stay outside? If so, it could be very harmful to shave her when it's cold out.
I recommend you tell your dad it's not a good idea, and is very cruel to take away her protection from the cold. How would he like it if he wasn't able to wear warm clothes in the winter? That's how it'll be for your dog. Without her coat, she'll be freezing, just like your dad would be if someone forced him to go out in the winter weather without warm clothes on.

Why would he want to do that in the first place?
Anyway, yes, common sense would tell you not to shave a dog during winter.

why would u shave a lab anyways? they do not have a thick fussy coat or even long hair at all...why would u do that? all they need is a lil brushing

i would deff. tell him not to shave ur dog. expecially if it stays outside. He/she (couldnt remember what you said it was =]) could freeze to death and die. I have a Golden Retriever and there is no way im going to get him shaved until the summer. Good Luck =]

A dog has hair for a reason. To keep them warm. Labs should never have their hair shaved. Dogs also can get frost bite. Brushing is all this kind of dog needs.
Tell your dad to go outside without HIS coat on when it is 20 degrees and see how he likes it!!! lol

If anything, cut her hair during the summer. Not the winter. I don't like when dogs get their hair cut though. My aunt would get her cocker spaniel's hair cut and he always looked like a skinned rabbit.
My labrador is pretty just the way he is.

There is no good reason to shave a Labrador at all. I have 3, 2 blacks and a yellow. They need the double coat fore protection from the elements when it is cold. If it is a black they blow their coat 2 times a year. My black male is starting to do it now. A yellow tends to shed all year, at least my yellow female does.
Just start brushing the dog everyday to reduce the amount of hair that sheds off.
