I'm African American, Will the ponytail way of cutting hair into layers work for me?

I'm looking for a way to cut my hair into layers, It is a little bit longer than shoulder length, and I saw on here where they said to put your hair up top in a ponytail and cut straight across, Will this work on african american hair as well? Please help, I'm tired of paying $80-$100 just for a haircut and nothing else!!!!

WOW !!! girl what salon are you going to??? 80 bucks??? WOW !!! anyways .... I dont recommend you do this yourself... I did it once althoguh I have not african american hair I have long curly hair.. and my hair was a BIG MESS...
